Job description

At Famly, we’re looking for an Engineering Manager to manage our growing number of highly skilled engineers, and to help us build an even greater product.

As EM for our Foundation crew, you would be working with the engineers that build & maintain our core technologies. This includes internal libraries used by the rest of the engineering department, the implementation of our design system, as well as developer-facing tooling. The Foundation crew also builds and maintains core workflows that are used by all users.

We are looking for someone who has a lot of process experience in running a SCRUM based delivery process for an engineering crew, and tap into an existing process together with the other engineering manager in Famly. You must have good people skills as well.

We expect a technical understanding, enabling you to assist with debugging, tech scoping, but you are not required to participate in the actual development of our product.

The position is preferably in Copenhagen.

And Famly are...? Well it all began when our co-founder Henrik’s daughter was ready to start at daycare. He couldn’t believe the amount of work being done on paper - and how distant he felt from his first child during the day. The paper ‘parent’ books they exchanged once a month just weren’t cutting it. Together with his friend, our co-founder and CEO Anders, they set about solving that.

These days, the 140 of us building Famly talk about trying to do two things for our 6,500+ customers:

  • Giving children the best possible start to life.

  • Championing the vital work that goes into making that happen.

We do it with software that brings hundreds of thousands of parents closer to their child’s day while they’re away from them. We also make financial, pedagogical, and planning tools for more than 50,000 childcare professionals, saving them hours and reducing their admin stress.

Ultimately, that gives them more time and headspace for the little ones that really matter. Come help us make that happen.

What you'll be doing:

  • Managing a crew (team) of approx 7 engineers, some on-site and some fully remote

  • Running efficient SCRUM-based development processes, building great features but also creating time for handling tech-debt, fixing bugs, and maintaining our platform.

  • Work closely with your crew's product manager to plan out and prioritise development work for the crew

  • Participate in scoping out work and initial early estimation for features

  • Ensure proper planning and estimation of development tasks

  • Collaborate with departments outside of Engineering and be the anchor point to your crew

  • Facilitate and plan technical onboarding of new engineers

  • Actively participate in the hiring of new engineers, both on-location and remote working

  • In collaboration with other EMs and our CTO, work on ensuring we have the best development processes

  • Develop and motivate your team of engineers

Job requirements

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Love to work with and develop highly skilled engineers

  • Are structured and can effectively run a SCRUM-based delivery process

  • Are good at motivating others to do their best

  • Find pleasure in structuring and executing highly efficient development processes

  • Are curious on new technologies, potentially also contributing

  • Have good communication skills

And it’d be even better if you:

  • Have a technical background, potentially experience with Scala, PHP or React

  • Enjoy a technical challenge, and are not afraid to contribute with actual code

  • Have experience as a Scrum master or Product owner

  • Previous experience as EM or team-lead

You'll be working with:

You will be working with other engineering managers (currently 4-5 others) at the Copenhagen office and will participate in all aspects of managing a growing group of engineers, including hiring and people management.

You will be responsible for running a crew as the dedicated engineering manager on the crew. A crew consists of 6-8 engineers, an engineering manager, PM (product manager) and a product designer. The engineers might be working remotely or on-site.

You will have the people management of the engineers on the crew and hence you need to have good people and communication skills.

In close collaboration with the PM in the crew and our SVP of Product, you will be responsible for planning development, new features as well as maintenance. You will participate in the planning and execution of development cycles.

Together with our CTO and the other engineering managers, you will be part of an efficient management team that has the authority to develop the best possible processes to ensure that we keep on delivering a great product to our customers

Our tech-stack consists of Scala, PHP, React, MySQL, Kubernetes and AWS and it will be an advantage, but not a requirement, if you have good technical insight.

You might have a background as an engineer or other technical background. Having experience with Scala or other functional programming languages is a plus.

You will report to our CTO.

You’ll love working here because:

  • We’re all about hiring a diverse array of clever people - who are good humans too. It means Famly is full of top thinkers and generous teammates waiting to help you shine.
  • A big focus on people support with personal and career development, including monthly training sessions in a wide variety of topics.

  • We like to give a lot of ownership both in terms of responsibility and freedom to try new things. We’ll get you up and running and collaborate along the way, of course.

  • Top-notch work equipment, a variety of working spaces for focus time and collaboration, and the flexibility to work from home when you need.

  • Office location on Købmagergade, conveniently located in the heart of Copenhagen.

  • A yearly training and conference budget of 10,000 DKK.

This position is preferable at the Copenhagen HQ office, where you can enjoy:

  • A yummy daily buffet and a well stocked drinks fridge (did someone say snack corner?)

  • Our private rooftop courtyard (sunny all year round, we promise…!)

  • Endless team fun with dinners out, office BBQs, Friday bars, big quarterly social events, game nights, a daily 7 minute workout, and more!

The interview process looks like:

  • An intro video chat with our People Partner

  • Logical test

  • An interview with our CTO

  • An interview with two of our other EM’s

  • An interview with one of our PM’s

  • Potentially an assignment with a written answer

We appreciate that everyone brings something unique, so even if you don’t tick every box above, we’d still love to read your application.

We're looking to fill the position as soon as possible, so get your application in today by sending us:

  • Your CV

  • A cover letter to tell us what you can bring to the role, and what speaks to you about Famly.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
